Kessar, Israel
(1931- )
   Born in Sana, Yemen, he immigrated (see ALIYA) to Palestine in 1933 and was educated in Jerusalem. He received a B.A. in economics and sociology and an M.A. in labor studies from Tel Aviv University. Beginning in 1984, he served as a member of the Knesset on the Maarach (see ALIGNMENT [MAARACH]) list and as secretary general of the Histadrut. Ousted in 1992 in the major restructuring in the Histadrut that occurred in the early 1990s, Kessar retired from party politics but retained influence in Israel Labor Party circles as an elder statesman.
